On Tuesday, October 26, an interdisciplinary performance titled “The Edges of Silence” was presented at the “Balkan” cinema, showcasing the collaboration and interaction of artists from various disciplines. The performance initiated a dialogue between media through improvisation, intertwining instinctive movement, electronic and acoustic music with video and visual art. The performance was not rehearsed in advance, with the aim of achieving uniqueness and spontaneity.
Olga Uzikaeva, the performance coordinator, shared her thoughts on the idea behind this collaboration: “I love working in the field of improvisation. I enjoy working with musicians and mixed media, and we’ve already done some projects with smaller groups. What fascinates me is how the composition comes together on the spot, in the moment, right in front of the audience, as a form of communication. I can always learn something new from artists from other disciplines. We had some structure because the space is quite interesting and complex, but we never know what the end result will be—that’s always something magical and unexpected.”
The video segment of the program was performed by Paulina Marrón and Aleksandar Lazar, with Tanja Ličina painting live. The movement was directed by Olga Uzikaeva, while the sound segment featured performances by WTNS (electronics and vocals), Anamarija Ilić (cello), Vukan Potežica (double bass), Kristijan Đorđević (saxophone), and Todor Rosić (percussion).
Olga Uzikaeva began her formal education in ballet school and practiced classical dance and ballet until 2014, when she developed an interest in contemporary dance and performance. Since then, she has attended numerous workshops for professional dancers with renowned choreographers worldwide. Since September 2018, she has lived in Serbia, where she previously resided from 2011 to 2013. In Serbia, Uzikaeva explores the contemporary independent art scene, and in her artistic practice, she is particularly interested in the interaction between sound—music, noise, spoken word—and movement, utilizing instant composition and improvisational techniques.
Creative and technical support for the performance “The Edges of Silence” was provided by the “Balkan” cinema, the Saša Marčeta Foundation, Kvaka 22, and TWV’9.
