May 16, 2021

The film The Loan Shark by director Nemanja Ćeranić, which won the “Milutin Čolić” award from the daily newspaper Politika for the best Serbian film at the recently concluded 49th FEST, was screened on May 16 in a special closed event at the “Balkan” cinema. On this occasion, the film’s cast and crew greeted the audience, and after the screening, they attended a formal cocktail reception, engaging in informal conversation and mingling with the attendees.

Politika’s jury awarded The Loan Shark “for its authentic and refreshing approach to the crime drama genre, skillfully utilizing techniques within the realm of auteur cinema.” The jury also highlighted the “exceptional work with non-professional actors, the socially engaged portrayal of societal issues, and the decision to set the story and production outside the capital city, contributing to the demetropolization of Serbian cinema.”

This film, directed by Nemanja Ćeranić and written by Strahinja Madžarević, focuses on a single day in the life of a loan shark in a small Serbian town, whose life is turned upside down due to a foolish mistake just as he is on the verge of realizing his dreams. After repaying the criminal who helped him get into the business and collecting all the debts from his clients, Mundir believes he is starting a new chapter in his life. However, one careless moment, caused by the stress affecting his diabetes, costs him dearly.
