The National Theatre “Toša Jovanović” is the oldest theater building in Serbia, established in 1839 when a grain warehouse was converted into a theater. According to legend, it was built out of the immense love of a wealthy local citizen for a famous actress from Pest; in order to bring her closer and entice her to visit the town, he constructed the theater. The interior of the theater, thanks to preserved original plans, has been authentically restored. The theater is named after the renowned Serbian actor of the Romantic era, Toša Jovanović, and the theatrical life in Zrenjanin has been active since the late 18th century.
